Hockey/ Ringette

Martin High School Hockey/Ringette Academy is an exciting program designed to challenge all participants, both male and female, on the ice, fitness facility and in the classroom. We aim to enhance an athlete’s level of play, understanding of the game, enhance athleticism and to prepare each athlete for life- long involvement in sport.

Program Overview

Athletes continue to develop their skills in a structured environment with highly experienced and qualified teachers and instructors through skill development and sport specific fitness training built into their school day. Our team of guest coaches and professional instruction provide power-skating, position specific training and goal-tending skill development.  Our students are also provided with indoor opportunities to improve their stick handling, quick release and accuracy shooting and overall puck/ring skills.

Our Hockey Academy program does not overlap with their U13, U15, U16, U18 & junior club teams, but rather complement their overall player development. In addition, we will continue to provide our athletes with educational opportunities for growth and exposure with a variety of potential travel experiences to other Academies and programs.

U18 AAA / Junior A / Western Hockey League

The Martin Academy will continue to support our U18 AAA, Junior A & Western Hockey League students. We provide sport specific fitness training, flexible academic support, on-ice skill & power-skating instruction and indoor puck skills development. This model is designed to enhance, complement, and support athletes during their respective seasons in full cooperation with their club teams and coaching staffs. For students who play hockey outside of our city or province, we coordinate their academic classes and timetables to ensure a smooth return to Martin at the conclusion of their respective seasons.

The Martin Academy also offers a unique experience for our grade 11 & 12 students. In cooperation with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, we offer Intro to Coach certification to our students built into our curriculum. These programs are a combination of theory and practice all conducted by our certified staff members.

Facilities

On-ice training takes place at the world-class Co-operators Centre housed in the REAL District. Our in-door shooting & hockey specific fitness program takes place at PEAK Performance. These proud supporters and community members make this innovative program through their partnership a reality.

Transportation

Regina Public School bussing is provided to our students during the day. Senior students, with parent/guardians & caregivers signed driver authorization forms, in many cases, may transport themselves to off-site venues.

Student Achievements

We are tremendously proud of all our students who have attended our program since its inception in the fall of 2013. Whether they are entering the workforce, attending a post-secondary or are fortunate enough to continue their respective hockey careers.

Over the past decade we have had many students go on to compete at various levels. From National Hockey League drafted students (Alex Kannock-Leipert, Jaydon Dureau, Matthew Perkins & Cole Sillinger) to minor and European pro leagues.  Our Hockey Academy is also well represented throughout the Western Hockey League (WHL), USHL and Canadian Junior Hockey League (AJHL, BCHL, MJHL, SJHL, OJHL). Many of our female and male alumnus have also went on to continue their education as a student-athlete in various Canadian Universities (USPORT) or attend Colleges in the United States (NCAA).

"At 14 yrs old I never realized just how much better I became from Martin's program of skills, power skating & sport specific fitness. Now in my 4th yr of professional hockey my commitment, work ethic and passion for hockey have been ingrained in me since my gr. 9 year at Martin. In one way or another we got better every day, from skating, agility, endurance and mobilty. I am proud to say I was part of the inaugural year of the Martin Academy. I was unsure what it would be like going into a brand new hockey academy, and after lots of thought and discussions with my family we took the chance and honestly I don't know if I'd be where I am now if I would have went a different direction. Being surrounded by supportive teachers and like-minded classmates was exactly what I needed. The friends I made there are still my closest friends to this day. The Academy gave me the opportunity to chase my dreams and invest in myself for 4 years. I cannot say enough good things about the academy and the way it is set up. The staff truly wanted me to succeed, and I will always be grateful."

"The memories I have of my time in the Martin Academy are truly special, but what I cherish the most is the freedom I experienced there. Unlike traditional high school experiences,  I wasn't confined to a desk all day. Instead, I engaged in high performance fitness training, various multi-sport activities, and pursued the sport I love throughout the day. This unique approach to learning has had a lasting impact on my success, not only athletically but on my social well being as well. I now realize how important that vibrant atmosphere was in shaping who I am today." Taylor Johnston

"My 4 year experience as a member of the Martin Academy has undoubtedly equipped me better than many others. The unique challenge of balancing academy classes with my academic responsibilities, while being an active member of a very competitive ringette team, taught me invaluable skills. Mastering the art of multitasking, effective planning, and organization has become essential in my current post-secondary studies. The necessity to hold myself accountable for both my academic and athletic performance has significantly aided me for life after high school when independence and personal responsibility are key to achieving postive outcomes." "My overall experience at Martin Academy was one of the best decisions I could have made. One of my favourite memory while at Martin was definitely our trip to Banff and Hockey Canada in Calgary. We had the opportunity to tour the olympic dressing rooms, view the gold medals and walk the hall of champions not to forget to mention the fun we had hiking up Johnston Canyon. The benefits of having extra ice times and hockey fitness training sessions at Martin definitely helped me gain a competitive edge. The staff did a great job in managing our hockey schedules, emphasized the importance of nutrition and time management, held us accountable academically and because of this Martin has become a well rounded nationally recognized program. I was allowed to do what I love, with many of my friends, which made my high school experience at Martin a fantastic experience. I had my mindset on being a professional athlete and Martin provided everything that I needed to acheive this."
